DTV Madness: The 41 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It

I shit you not, this is actually a movie and that is actually its title.

The 41 Year Old Virgin Who Knocked Up Sarah Marshall and Felt Superbad About It is a DTV parody movie similar in vein to Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th which was really the cheaper DTV version of Scary Movie released the same year.

In T41YOVWKUSMAFSAI (abbreviated title), as the title would suggest, it's a parody of Judd Apatow's brand of comedy movies. The movie was shit, don't get me wrong, but it did get me to laugh twice I think and all things considered, that should be considered a success.

The problem with the movie (and there are lots) is that it was set up to fail. Parody movies by themselves are tough enough to pull off, relying 99% on sight gags and slapstick humour. Scary Movie, for example, I thought was good moreso for how well it weaved in several horror plot lines together rather than just rely on the gags. And if we're talking about gags, then Top Secret! would be my favourite movie for that, right up there with my favourite comedy movies.

What makes it more difficult for T41YOVWKUSMAFSAI is that parodies of comedies are even tougher to pull off. You're trying to make comedies out of comedies, trying to outdo the original material, which in most cases is near impossible. It's not funny when you try to parody better comedies.

There's really no need to go through the story. Essentially, they took all of the Apatow related movies, put them through a blender and slapped it on to a DVD. The result is horrifying.

I think the only redeeming quality of the movie are a few of the actors and their imitations. Notably, the guy who imitates Jonah Hill and the dude who did Seth Rogen were pretty spot on with their imitations, from their voices to their mannerisms.

Like I said, the movie did elicit laughter from me on two occasions, so take it for what it is. If you decide to rent (or God forbid, buy) this movie, you pretty much know what you're getting into. T41YOVWKUSMAFSAI is a bad movie and more often than not, you'll laugh at it and not with it. Later geeks!

Finally, the Xbox 360!!

So as I mentioned in a previous post, I received an Xbox 360 for Christmas from my dad. A great present it was! I've had 3 weeks to enjoy it so I guess I can give you my impressions of it now. First the controller. In truth, I haven't felt a controller this comfortable in my gaming life before. As a child who grew up on the 8-bit generation, with just a directional pad and 2 buttons, there was quite a learning curve getting used to using two analog sticks at the same time. You might say, "Hey Lam, how bout the PS2? You have that machine, and that has analog sticks". True, but of the twenty or so games I have for that, all of them used either only 1 analog stick, or allowed the option to switch on to the directional pad. Using 2 sticks at the same time was at first just uncomfortable. This made for all sorts of trouble as I was playing Gears of War . Luckily for me, I had computer controlled teammates that watched my back. I love the Media Center capabilities...

MAX PAYNE was oh so PAYNEFUL!!!

What a failure this was. An EPIC FAILURE~! And I'll tell you why. This movie had everything going for it which was why it made the failure seem so huge. It had star power. It had a very competent director. The visual style was there. It had a simple storyline... a storyline that was basically fuck-proof because it's so basic. The effects (when there were any) were also pretty great. So where did they go wrong? Pacing. If the first two-thirds of the film was like the last third, I think it would have been a fine film. Not great by any means, but fine. I mean, there was hardly any action in the first hour. It was all talk and build up. Every 5 minutes I was saying to myself, "okay, something cool is gonna happen now". But it never came. I think had they added 2 or 3 big action sequences during that hour, that it would have helped the film breathe and flow better.
